Several lines of evidence suggest that the function of the dentate gyrus is pattern separation, which emphasizes the differences between old and new memories ( Kesner et al., 2004 Kesner, 2007a Rolls, 2010 Palmer and Good, 2011 Schmidt et al., 2012).
